Check the converted file

SVG stores vector artwork, while DXF is used by CAD and fabrication applications. After conversion, open the DXF in your target application and check the physical size, visible paths and text. Compare the result with the original SVG before preparing a cutting or machining job.

Example. On 7 October 2026 we converted a 100 × 60 mm sheet (width="100mm" height="60mm" viewBox="0 0 100 60") with a red rectangle 80 mm wide, a blue circle, the text “SVG 80 mm” and a green curved path. The DXF that came back is 11,467 bytes. We read it with a DXF library; we did not open it in a CAD or CNC program.

  • Size: the rectangle is 80.000 mm wide and 30.000 mm high and the circle radius is 8.000 mm. The drawing units are millimetres.
  • Shapes: the rectangle became a closed polyline and the circle a CIRCLE. The curve became an open polyline of 8 short segments, at most 0.3 mm away from the original curve (32 mm long); it is not a spline.
  • Text: the text is a TEXT entity in the Arial font (3.5 mm high), not outlines. If the font is missing on the CAD or CNC machine, convert the text to paths in your SVG editor before converting.
  • Position and colours: the picture is not mirrored. The top-left corner of the SVG sheet is the point (0, 0), so the drawing lies below it, in negative Y. Stroke colours became entity colours, and everything is on layer 0.

Limits we found: a path made of quadratic Bézier commands (Q or T) lost its end points — the polyline stopped 1.8–5.9 mm short of the path ends on curves 10–90 mm long — so check such curves before cutting. The size is exact when the SVG has a viewBox together with a width and height in mm, cm or in. Without a viewBox the size can differ from the 96 DPI rule: a 320 px rectangle came out at 98.77 mm instead of 84.67 mm. Gradients, filters and clipping paths were not tested.

SVG File

File extension .SVG, .SVGZ
CategoryImage File
DescriptionSVG is a vector type of graphics, such files provide excellent data compression within the small file size. It provides scaling up to any size without loss in quality, supports various filters and interactivity. This format is aimed at storing either vector or vector/raster graphic data in XML code, supporting animated graphics. SVG files are actually text image description that can be edited and read in text editors. They are less in size than JPEG or GIF copies of the same quality.

DXF File

File extension .DXF
CategoryCAD File
DescriptionDXF (Drawing Interchange File Format, Drawing Exchange Format) was intended as a universal extension to boost the compatibility of documents created in AutoCAD. Based on ASCII, it shows better compatibility than DWG. For instance, the Valve Hammer Editor exports 3D data in the DXL format, so that other programs can be used to open them. Over its history, which started in 1982, the DXF format has undergone numerous transformations.

SVG to DXF Converter — Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert SVG to DXF?

SVG is a web-centric vector format designed for screens; DXF (Drawing eXchange Format) is AutoCAD's interchange format, readable by virtually every CNC, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, and CAD application. Converting SVG to DXF makes vector artwork usable in manufacturing and fabrication software that does not accept SVG input.

What machines and software read DXF?

DXF is understood by AutoCAD, LibreCAD, FreeCAD, QCAD, and virtually all CAD packages. CNC routers (VCarve, Mach3, LinuxCNC), laser cutters (Lightburn, RDWorks, Epilog Laser), vinyl cutters (Roland CutStudio, Graphtec Studio), and 3D modeling tools (Fusion 360, Blender import) all read DXF. Cricut and Silhouette cutting machines accept DXF via their desktop software.

Are SVG paths and shapes fully converted?

Shapes and paths are converted to vector geometry, not to a picture, but not every curve keeps its type. Circles become CIRCLE, ellipses become ELLIPSE, filled shapes get a solid HATCH, and lines, rectangles, polylines, polygons and paths become LWPOLYLINE. Curves and arcs are approximated by short straight segments, not by SPLINE or ARC entities, and quadratic Bézier paths (Q and T commands) can lose their end points, so check curves before cutting. Gradients, filters and clipping paths were not tested.

What happens to SVG text elements?

Live text becomes a TEXT entity that refers to the font by name (for example Arial); it is not converted to outlines. If that font is not installed on the target machine, CNC and cutting software may not render the text correctly. For reliable machining, convert text to outlines/paths in your SVG editor (Inkscape: Path → Object to Path) before converting to DXF; outlined text is converted like any other path.

Does the converter handle SVG coordinate system differences?

Yes. SVG uses a Y-down coordinate system (origin top-left); DXF uses Y-up. The picture is not mirrored in the DXF: the top-left corner of the SVG sheet becomes the point (0, 0), so the drawing lies below it, in negative Y.

Are SVG units and scale preserved?

Yes, when the SVG has a viewBox together with a width and height in physical units (mm, cm or inches): the size is kept and the DXF is written in millimeters. Without a viewBox the size depends on the page size and the content and may not follow the 96 DPI rule, so add a viewBox before converting. Check the scale in your CAD or CNC software after import and adjust if the size does not match your intended physical dimensions.

Can I convert multiple SVG files at once?

The online converter processes one file at a time. For batch conversion — converting an entire library of SVG icons or design files to DXF for CNC production — use the desktop Total CAD Converter, which processes folders and supports command-line automation.

What is the maximum SVG file size?

Up to 7 MB. Most SVG files are text (XML), so even complex illustrations rarely exceed 5 MB. Files approach the limit only when they embed large raster images as base64 data URIs inside the SVG.

The DXF opens in my CAD software but the geometry looks wrong — what should I check?

Verify the unit system (millimeters vs inches) in your CAD software matches your intended scale. Check that layers are visible (some DXF readers hide all layers except layer 0 by default). Curves in this DXF are made of short straight segments, not splines, so no setting in your CAD or CNC software will turn them back into smooth curves.

SVG and DXF: Two Vector Worlds

Quick answer: To convert Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) to DXF, upload your .svg file to our free online converter, choose DXF as the output format, and click Convert. It translates paths, shapes, and curves into DXF entities and flips the Y axis for CAD, so you can download a DXF ready for CNC, laser, and vinyl machines. No installation, no signup.

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based vector format designed for the web — browsers render it natively, and graphic tools like Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, and Figma export it. DXF (Drawing eXchange Format) is AutoCAD's vendor-neutral interchange format for 2D and 3D geometry, readable by virtually every CAD application, CNC controller, and digital fabrication machine.

Converting SVG to DXF bridges these two worlds: take artwork or logos designed for screens and make them usable for cutting, engraving, routing, and machining.

How to Convert SVG to DXF Online

  1. Upload the SVG file. Drag and drop or click to browse. Files up to 7 MB are accepted.
  2. Wait for conversion. The converter parses the SVG XML, translates path commands and shapes to DXF entities, and remaps the coordinate system.
  3. Download the DXF. Click Download and open the file in your CAD or CNC software.

Free online. No account, no software installation required.

Who Uses SVG-to-DXF Conversion?

UserTypical Workflow
CNC router operatorsDesign in Inkscape or Illustrator → export SVG → convert to DXF → load in VCarve Pro, Mach3, LinuxCNC, or GRBL for toolpath generation
Laser cutter usersCreate artwork in Canva, Figma, or Inkscape → SVG → DXF → Lightburn, RDWorks, or Epilog Laser Dashboard for cut and engrave
Vinyl cutter operatorsDownload an SVG logo from a client → convert to DXF → import into Roland CutStudio, Graphtec Studio, or Sure Cuts A Lot
Architects and engineersImport SVG floor plan sketches or diagrams from web tools into AutoCAD, LibreCAD, or FreeCAD for technical annotation and dimensioning

Technical Considerations

Coordinate System

SVG uses a Y-down coordinate system (origin at top-left, Y increases downward). DXF uses Y-up (Y increases upward). The converter handles this automatically, so the picture is not mirrored in CAD and CNC software. The top-left corner of the SVG sheet becomes the point (0, 0) and the drawing lies below it, in negative Y; the geometry is stored in a block that is inserted with a negative Y scale. Check the position and orientation after import.

Units and Scale

SVG user units are 96 DPI pixels by default (1 px = 1/96 inch). When the SVG has a viewBox together with a width and height in physical units (mm, cm, or inches), the physical size is kept and the DXF is written in millimeters. If the SVG has no viewBox, the size depends on the page size and the content and may not follow the 96 DPI rule, so add a viewBox before converting. After importing the DXF, verify the scale in your CAD or CNC software and use the Scale command if the physical dimensions differ from your intent.

Text: Convert to Paths First

SVG text that references a system font (e.g., font-family="Arial") may not appear correctly in CAD software if that font is not installed. Before converting, convert all text to paths/outlines in your SVG editor:
