Convert MBox to XLS — Export Thunderbird Emails to Excel Spreadsheets

You need to analyze email data — count messages by sender, track response times, or build a report of all correspondence for a specific period. The data sits in Thunderbird as MBOX files, and there is no built-in export to spreadsheet. Total Thunderbird Converter reads your Thunderbird mailbox and exports emails to XLS files where each message becomes a row in an Excel spreadsheet. Here is what it does:
  • Exports email metadata (sender, recipient, date, subject, CC, BCC) as spreadsheet columns
  • Processes thousands of emails from multiple Thunderbird folders in one batch
  • Creates one XLS file per folder or merges everything into a single spreadsheet
  • Includes a command-line interface for scripted and scheduled exports
  • Works offline — email data never leaves your PC
  • 30-day free trial, no email or credit card required

MBox vs XLS: What Is the Difference?

MBox is a plain-text file format that stores email messages sequentially — each message starts with a "From " line, followed by headers and body text. Mozilla Thunderbird uses MBox as its default storage: one MBox file per mail folder (Inbox, Sent, Drafts). MBox files are not designed for data analysis, filtering, or reporting.

XLS is the binary spreadsheet format used by Microsoft Excel 97–2003 and readable by every modern spreadsheet application. XLS stores data in rows and columns with support for sorting, filtering, formulas, and pivot tables.

The conversion creates a structured table from unstructured email data. Each email becomes a row, and each email field (sender, date, subject, body) becomes a column. Once in XLS, you can sort emails by date, filter by sender, count messages per month, or build charts — tasks that are impossible inside Thunderbird.

How to Convert MBox to XLS

  • Step 1. Launch Total Thunderbird Converter. The program detects your Thunderbird profile and shows all mail folders in a tree view.
  • Step 2. Select the Thunderbird folders that contain emails you want to export. Use Check All to include every folder, or pick specific ones like Inbox or Sent.
  • Step 3. Click XLS in the format toolbar at the top of the window.
  • Step 4. Choose which email fields to export as spreadsheet columns: sender, recipient, date, subject, body text, CC, BCC, and attachment file names. Uncheck fields you do not need.
  • Step 5. Set the destination folder for the output XLS files. Choose whether to create one file per Thunderbird folder or merge all emails into a single spreadsheet.
  • Step 6. Click Start. The converter processes all selected emails and writes XLS files with one email per row. Column headers are generated from the selected field names.

Open the resulting XLS file in Excel, LibreOffice Calc, or Google Sheets. Apply filters, create pivot tables, or use formulas to analyze your email data.

Command-Line Conversion

Total Thunderbird Converter includes a command-line interface for automated exports:

ThunderbirdConverter.exe -sXLS "C:\Users\John\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\abc123.default\Mail\Local Folders\Inbox" C:\Output\Inbox.xls

Additional flags control the output:

  • -IncludeFields "From,To,Date,Subject" — select specific columns
  • -MergeAll — combine all folders into one XLS file

Save the command in a .bat file and schedule it with Windows Task Scheduler to generate weekly or monthly email reports automatically.

When Do You Need MBox to XLS Conversion?

There are several common scenarios where exporting Thunderbird emails to Excel spreadsheets makes sense:
  1. Email analytics. You want to count messages by sender, track email volume over time, or measure response rates. XLS gives you sorting, filtering, and pivot tables that MBOX cannot provide.
  2. Compliance reporting. Auditors or regulators require a list of all emails exchanged during a specific period. Export to XLS with date, sender, recipient, and subject columns for a complete audit trail.
  3. CRM data import. Customer emails in Thunderbird need to be loaded into a CRM system. Export to XLS, map columns to CRM fields, and import the spreadsheet directly.
  4. Project documentation. A project wraps up and all related correspondence must be archived as a structured record. XLS provides a searchable, sortable log of every email.
  5. Legal review. During litigation, opposing counsel requests email metadata in spreadsheet format. Export sender, recipient, date, and subject to XLS without exposing full message bodies.

5 Star

"Our quarterly audit requires a spreadsheet of all client emails with dates, senders, and subjects. Before Total Thunderbird Converter, I was copying this data by hand from 3,000 emails. Now I export the entire quarter to XLS in two minutes. The field selection lets me exclude body text and keep only the metadata columns the auditors need."

5 Star Rachel Simmons Compliance Analyst

"I export my Sent folder to XLS every month to track how many proposals I sent and to which clients. Sorting by date and filtering by recipient in Excel takes seconds. The merge option is great because I can combine Inbox and Sent into one spreadsheet for a complete conversation log."

5 Star Tomasz Kowalski Sales Manager

"We receive study submissions via email and I need to catalog them in a spreadsheet for the review committee. The converter pulls sender, date, subject, and attachment names into clean columns. Only wish it could export directly to XLSX to avoid the 65,000 row limit, but splitting into multiple files works fine for now."

FAQ ▼

You choose the fields in the conversion wizard: sender (From), recipient (To), date, subject, body text, CC, BCC, and attachment file names. Each selected field becomes a column in the output spreadsheet.
Yes. The merge option combines emails from all selected folders into a single spreadsheet. Alternatively, you can export each folder as a separate XLS file.
Yes. Total Thunderbird Converter decodes MIME-encoded headers and body text automatically. Emails in Chinese, Arabic, Cyrillic, or any other encoding are exported to XLS with correct characters.
Yes, if you select the body field. The plain-text version of the email body is placed in a cell. For HTML emails, the converter extracts the text content. Very long bodies are stored as-is in a single cell.
Yes. Use the command-line interface in a .bat file and schedule it with Windows Task Scheduler. This lets you generate weekly or monthly email reports without manual work.
The XLS format supports up to 65,536 rows per sheet. If your mailbox exceeds this limit, the converter creates additional sheets or files automatically. For larger datasets, consider exporting to XLSX instead.
Yes. Use File → Open to load any MBOX file from disk — including exports from Apple Mail, Eudora, or SeaMonkey. The converter processes them identically to Thunderbird mailboxes.
